What Supplements Are Good For Stress & Anxiety?

Anxiety is caused by the release of the stress hormones adrenalin and cortisol. The first step to reducing anxiety is to balance your blood sugar so your body is not relying on your hormones for energy. Next, try to be concious of your stress level and use breathing exercises, meditation, yoga and/or counselling to help reduce anxiety.

I think my daughter has an eating disorder. What should I do?

It's important to have a good support system for your daughter, including a nutritionist, family doctor/naturopathic doctor, and a therapist who has experience helping clients with eating disorders. Anorexia is essentially self-starvation, while Bulimia is binge eating followed by self-induced vomiting or laxative use. Scientists are now proving that malnutrition can play a large part of the development of these conditions.healthpic8 Several nutrients including zinc, essential fatty acids, B6 and tryptophan deficiency have been linked to eating disorders. Although supplementation might improve appetite control, changing the diet and providing education about health and wellness is vital for long term success. As your daughter's nutrition improves, her anxiety and compulsions regarding food will decrease and she will likely be more open to making positive dietary changes.

How Do I Stay Alkaline?

alkalineDis-ease of the body usually starts when our internal environment becomes acidic and begins to heal again when the body becomes more alkaline. The optimum pH level for health is around 7.3-7.4, and can be maintained if your diet consists of about 75% vegetables (including lots of leafy greens), fruits, and sprouts and 25% of beans, grains, nuts, and seeds.

Can you give tips to help me quit smoking?

smokingAn alkaline diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables can help to reduce the cravings of nicotine. Helpful supplements include vitamin C , chromium, zinc, B6 and niacin. Most smokers have blood sugar regulation issues so it's important to avoid processed foods and refined sugars and grains. After your assessment, we can come up with an eating plan to help keep you stable. I'd also likely recommend stress reduction and possibly a detox program. It all depends on the results of your body system assessment.

Is organic actually more nutritious?

It is not so much that organic food is significantly more nutritious than conventional foods.healthpic15 Although this is often the case as organic farmers tend to grow their food in a higher quality soil than mass production farmers that load the soil with chemicals, and strip it of nutrients by over planting the same crops continuously. Smaller family farms tend to grow more heritage varieties that can be higher in nutrients over the mass farmed produce that has been genetically modified for it's toughness to survive transportation and storage. The big thing really, is that consumption of organic foods can reduce exposure to pesticide residues and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Sometimes it's not so much what isn't in the food (nutrients), it's what extras you're getting that we just don't want in our bodies.

What's the difference between a Holistic Nutritionist and a Dietician?

You'll usually find Dieticians working in more clinical settings such as hospitals, public health, community health centers, long term care and food service. Dieticians are educated in food and nutrition and counsel their clientshealthpic28 on healthy eating habits and nutritional issues. They generally follow the traditional food pyramid set out by the government. They use the Canada's Food Guide and calorie requirement to make recommendations. Dieticians don't usually explore the link between diet and dis-ease.

Can you make me feel better without drugs?

healthpic16Thanks for the tricky question ;). I would like to say that I can heal the world, but really, my job is to educate you on ways to improve your own health. It really depends on your present health status, if you're currently on medication etc.

There is a place for modern medications when someone has a life threatening illness or condition. Most of us did not become ill overnight so using natural strategies to improve health does take time, and medications can be a helpful bridge until you address the root cause of the dis-ease. I always encourage clients to keep their family physican up to date regarding all natural strategies they are using. Often if a client is on medication, their need for it decreases as their body systems become more functional and health improves. If you are not currently on medication (even better), and your doctor gives you the ok to try holistic nutrition first to correct imbalances and reduce your symptoms, I'm happy to help you in any way that I can. :) Eating well and leading a healthy lifestyle is always beneficial no matter what.
